A Trip to Envigado: A Paradise Right Outside of the City
Abstract: This week, I visited my cousin who lives in Envigado. Envigado is a municipality that borders Medellin. Known for its stunning, natural landscapes and its lush, tranquil hills, Envigado is an escape from the city!
Introduction: As my trip to Colombia wraps up, I am trying to enjoy as much of the country’s breathtaking landscapes as possible! Envigado, a municipality situated only a few miles outside of Medellin, is full of natural beauty. This weekend, we took a hike into a nature reserve in the Andes Mountains. When I wasn’t outside enjoying the wonderful landscapes, I relaxed in my cousin’s home. There’s nothing like being with family!

How far did I travel this week?
This week, I traveled about ten miles outside of Medellin. I went to a municipality of Antioquia called Envigado.
How far have I traveled on my journey so far?
In Colombia, the major regions of the country are divided into departments. Antioquia is one of those departments and Medellin is its capital. So far, I have travelled to 8 departments out of the 32 departments in the country! Do you think that’s a lot? How many states out of the 50 United States have you traveled to?
How did I get around this week?
Because my cousin has a car, I spent most of this week getting around by car.
What was the most interesting place I visited this week?
The most interesting place I visited this week was a nature reserve called Arenales. The nature reserve is home to the former prison of a famous criminal in Colombia named Pablo Escobar. In order to see the ruins of the prison, you have to climb up a long trail that includes a river, a waterfall, and lots of stunning landscapes!
Weather Tally (enter the # of days for each weather type):
Partly cloudy: 1
What is the air temperature right now?
66.2 degrees Fahrenheit
How was the weather this week?
The temperature was great this week! Almost every day was sunny. Just like in Medellin, Envigado has a wonderful temperate climate. Today, the highest temperature that was reached was 82 degrees.
What animals did I see this week?
Apart from the two dogs, the two cockatoos, and the three aquariums full of fish at my cousin’s house, I saw a number of birds this week hopping around my cousin’s backyard. Birds that are all colors of the rainbow can be found in my cousin’s yard!
What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?
The coolest thing I saw this week was the Cordillera Central, or the Central Andes range of Colombia. The Andes mountain range is the biggest mountain range in the world. It extends through a number of South American countries. In Colombia, the range is divided into the Western, Central, and Eastern range. Envigado, located at a slightly higher elevation than Medellin, offers a breath-taking view of the mountains. As I climbed up the trail in Arenales, I was dazzled by the beauty of the lush hills.
Other Nature News: Part of the trail in Arenales consisted of trekking through a river. At first, I tried my best to not get my sneakers wet, but soon, I was soaked all the way up to my knees! When we finally reached the end of the river, we saw that the river converged with a roaring waterfall. Many of our group members jumped into the waterfall in all of their clothing! Have you ever jumped into a river before? The water is not warm, I promise you! I looked on in awe and laughed. I would have been shivering in that water!
What languages are spoken here?
What type of money is used here?
Just like in Medellin and the rest of the country, the Colombian peso is used in Envigado
How much does a bottle of water cost?
What was the best meal this week?
The best meal I had this week was a home-cooked meal that consisted of fried fish and plantains! Although my cousin lives in Antioquia, she is costeña like the rest of my Colombian family. That means that she was born on the coast of Colombia. My cousin loves coastal food, like seafood and shrimp. Always having loved seafood myself, now I know where it comes from!
What music did I listen to this week?
This week I listened to a band called Cultura Profetica. My cousin’s oldest son loves reggae and Cultura Profetica is one of the most famous Spanish reggae bands in the world. Whenever we drove around Envigado, he blasted Spanish reggae in the car!
What activity was the most fun this week?
The most fun I had this week was trekking to Arenales! I love the great outdoors!
What did I read this week?
This week, I read lots of news articles in El Espectador. El Espectador is one of Colombia’s leading news journals, especially for political news.
What games or sports did I play this week?
This week, I played dominoes with my cousins. Even though my cousins are experts at the game, I was able to beat them a couple of times! I learned that the game is very mathematic. As long as you keep track of the numbers, you’ll be able trick your opponent!
Other news from this week:
Just like in the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated every May in Colombia. This Mother’s Day, my cousin invited her family members to her house for lunch. We ate lasagna and rolls of bread, and told jokes over dessert. Even though I am far away from my own mother in New York, being in my cousin’s house made me feel a lot less homesick.
