Ryan’s Transportation Field Note

Abstract: A short blurb about this article:
Public transportation is the main form of transportation that people in Milan use. Public transportation comes in the form of buses, trains and even subways in Milan. It is easy and affordable. Read more to learn about how Italians get around in Milan and how I feel about using the public transportation system for the first time in my life.

Every day my heart races as I run to the bus stop to catch my bus.  I don’t want to be late to class so I make sure I always am on time for my bus.  Every day I take bus #50 to my school.  After a 10 minute bus right, I am there!  It’s just that easy!  I never use public transportation at home in the United States.  I have my own car and I drive myself to work, school and back home.  It feels good to take a break in Milan and rely on the buses, trams and subways to drive me to school and around the city every day.

How do people get around?:

Many people rely on public transportation like buses, trams and the underground subway.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I am not used to taking public transportation.  I am very privileged to have my own car in the United States.  At first I was scared because before arriving to Milan, my friends and family told me all the negative things about taking public transportation.  Some people warned me that it could be dangerous.  However, public transportation in Milan is safe and easy.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

It is hard to find parking in Milan and gas is really expensive, so many people do not have cars.  Because of this, public transportation is very convenient.  It is cheap and easy to use if you need to travel around Milan but do not have a car.  Milan is a big city with many people and factories that pollute the air.  The buses try to help the environment by using less gas.  They are Eco-buses.  An Eco-bus means that the bus does not pollute the air as much as regular buses do.
