Friends, have I told you about the area of Singapore? It is 193 kilometers, which is slightly smaller than the size of New York. So it is very easy and rapid to commute from one place to another. There are various means of transportation like MRTs (mass rapid transit which is like a subway), buses and taxis. You can also walk to nearby areas if you prefer, which is very convenient in Singapore. I normally travel by bus and MRT to go to music class or to go to a shopping center. How do you go to school daily?
People here travel by different means of transportation. They choose based on what is most convenient. Though cars are extremely expensive here, almost all people here have cars. So people travel by their own cars. Public transportation is used widely as it is very safe and a faster way to reach to your destination. The buses and trains also run frequently.
Tourists, however, like to take “Beca rides” also known as “Trishaw rides”. This is a combination of a rickshaw and bicycle with three wheels, and easily found on the roads of Singapore. Trishaws are not only a tourist attraction, but they also can be used to go to neighboring places or islands.
Let me tell you, the traffic system in Singapore is so organized that you’ll hardly come across any accidents!
I do miss my two-wheeler bike a lot, which I used to have in India. However, I am really pleased with the Singapore Transportation System. I usually travel by public transportation. According to me, the prices of the tickets are very reasonable for everyone. Buses and MRTs are very well connected to each other as well as to almost all shopping malls, hospitals, tourist attractions and even to airport terminals! If you want to get to your destination faster, you can call a taxi. It is a computerized calling system. You can just dial one number from your phone and provide the details of your address and taxi will come to you within few minutes.
The Singapore government encourages people to use public transport systems, which are faster and reasonable. To provide best service they have built ample, meaning a lot, of bus stops and MRT stations in a short distance.
People avoid driving cars due to high gas and parking charges. You can see a child as young as 6 years old to someone as old as 80 traveling alone on public transportation. They have a transportation card and they call it “ezi link” card. There is a special discount for children, students and senior citizens. To pay, you just tap the card in front of a tapping machine into the bus or before entering to MRT.
