This week, I got around in so many different ways! One way was by metro train just like in New York City. Another way was by a train that you can sleep in. I also travelled by van, boat and taxi car.
What was the most interesting place we visited this week?
The most interesting place I visited this week was a very old temple near Aswan, Egypt. This temple is called Philae (pronounced fill-ay). The reason this temple was so amazing was because it was on an island, so we had to take a boat to get there! When I arrived after a short boat ride, there was hardly anyone around. I could enjoy the temple so much more because there wasn’t a lot of tourists. I got to see really great art and buildings at Philae!
This Week’s Travel News:
This week I left the city of Cairo by taking a train south. I followed the Nile River upstream. “Upstream” means that I was traveling in the opposite direction that the river flows. I slept on the train and woke up in Aswan, Egypt. Aswan is over 600 miles away from Cairo! It is located very close to the Nile River, just like Cairo, but much further south.
After I arrived in Aswan, I woke up at 3:30 in the morning! Why wake up so early? I had to go see the sites around Aswan! A “site” is a place where many people or tourists go to see something cool. I went to four different sites in Aswan! I got to see two temples, a huge dam, and an unfinished obelisk. An “obelisk” is a giant stone pillar with a pointed top. There is a famous example of an obelisk in Washington D.C. at a site called the Washington Monument. Have you seen photos of this obelisk?

What was the coolest thing we saw in nature this week?
The coolest thing I saw in nature this week was a meteor shower! It was very early in the morning so it was completely dark. On our way to the sites near Aswan, we drove out into the country where there are no city lights. This made the night sky even more visible. Luckily, a meteor shower was happening that day!
A meteor shower looks like many shooting stars. Actually, a meteor shower is many very tiny meteorites falling to the earth. “Meteorites” are very small rocks from space that burn up in our atmosphere causing them to look like shooting stars!

This Week’s News:
This week, I learned an important lesson about traveling abroad. When I went to purchase train tickets for Aswan, there was some fighting at the train station. The drivers didn’t want to go there because it was dangerous. We had to get our train ticket from another train station. Luckily, we didn’t see any of the fighting up close, but later on, the action was on the news that night!
The fighting had to do with Egypt’s recent revolution. Many Egyptians are still not happy with the way their government is working. This is what is causing many problems and fighting in Egypt right now. When you are traveling, it is important to pay attention to what is happening in the country. Things may happen and you have to be very aware!
