How far did we travel this week?

This week I traveled over 600 miles!

How far have we traveled on our journey so far?

So far, I have traveled over 7,500 miles on my journey!

How did we get around this week?

This week,  I got around in so many different ways!  One way was by metro train just like in New York City.  Another way was by a train that you can sleep in.  I also travelled by van, boat and taxi car.

What was the most interesting place we visited this week?

This is at Philae. See the beautiful flowers?

The most interesting place I visited this week was a very old temple near Aswan, Egypt.  This temple is called Philae (pronounced fill-ay).  The reason this temple was so amazing was because it was on an island, so we had to take a boat to get there!  When I arrived after a short boat ride, there was hardly anyone around.  I could enjoy the temple so much more because there wasn’t a lot of touristsI got to see really great art and buildings at Philae!

This Week’s Travel News:

This week I left the city of Cairo by taking a train south. I followed the Nile River upstream.  “Upstream” means that I was traveling in the opposite direction that the river flows.  I slept on the train and woke up in Aswan, Egypt.  Aswan is over 600 miles away from Cairo!  It is located very close to the Nile River, just like Cairo, but much further south.

This is Philae!

After I arrived in Aswan, I woke up at 3:30 in the morning!  Why wake up so early?  I had to go see the sites around Aswan!  A “site” is a place where many people or tourists go to see something cool.  I went to four different sites in Aswan!  I got to see two temples, a huge dam, and an unfinished obelisk.  An “obelisk” is a giant stone pillar with a pointed top.  There is a famous example of an obelisk in Washington D.C. at a site called the Washington Monument. Have you seen photos of this obelisk?

This is the unfinished obelisk

Weather Tally (enter the # of days for each weather type):

Sunny:  7   Cloudy:0    Partly cloudy:0       Rainy:0      Snowy:0       Windy: 0

What is the air temperature right now?

Right now, the air temperature is about 60 degrees. That is because it is early in the morning.  As the day goes along, it will get much hotter!

How was the weather this week?

The weather this week was really great!  It was sunny with no wind, rain, or clouds!

What animals did we see this week?

A stray dog that lived near the temple at Aswan

This week I got to see horses pulling carriages.  Also, there are many stray dogs and cats that live on the streets and even near the temples we visited!

What was the coolest thing we saw in nature this week?

The coolest thing I saw in nature this week was a meteor shower!  It was very early in the morning so it was completely dark.  On our way to the sites near Aswan, we drove out into the country where there are no city lights.  This made the night sky even more visible.  Luckily, a meteor shower was happening that day!

A meteor shower looks like many shooting stars.  Actually, a meteor shower is many very tiny meteorites falling to the earth.  “Meteorites” are very small rocks from space that burn up in our atmosphere causing them to look like shooting stars!

What languages are spoken here?

Mostly, people speak Arabic here.  Some people speak English too, but not many!

What type of money is used here?

The Nile river

Here in Aswan, as in Cairo, the Egyptian pound is the money, or type of currency.

How much does a bottle of water cost?

A bottle of water in Aswan costs about 5 Egyptian pounds.  In American dollars, this is about 60 cents!

What was the best meal this week?

This week, the best meal we had was Egyptian lasagna.  This lasagna has meat, cheese, and macaroni in it.

What activity was the most fun this week?

The most fun activity this week was going to see the sites near Aswan.

What did I read this week?

This week I read about how to operate our camera correctly.  Our photography is getting better and better the more I learn about how to use it.

This Week’s News:

This week, I learned an important lesson about traveling abroad. When I went to purchase train tickets for Aswan, there was some fighting at the train station.  The drivers didn’t want to go there because it was dangerous.  We had to get our train ticket from another train station.  Luckily, we didn’t see any of the fighting up close, but later on, the action was on the news that night!

The fighting had to do with Egypt’s recent revolution.  Many Egyptians are still not happy with the way their government is working.  This is what is causing many problems and fighting in Egypt right now. When you are traveling, it is important to pay attention to what is happening in the country. Things may happen and you have to be very aware!

I’m trying to pose like one of the statues!
