Daily Life Field Note

What is daily life like?

Abstract: How is daily life in Brazil similar or different from your own? Do people use the same transportation, wear the same clothes and have the same jobs as people in the United States? I asked one adult in Brazil about what they do every. Take a look and compare it to daily life of adults that you know!

Introduction: This week, I spoke to the teacher of my Portuguese class here in Brazil. She grew up in the city of Salvador, and now she lives here with her family. She knows all about Salvador, including  the most interesting things to do. I ask her for advice about the city all of the time! It was very interesting  to talk to her this week about what she does outside of class. Her life seems very similar to that of any teacher in the United States. What do you think about what Amanda does every day? Do you know any adults like her?

What is your full name?

This is Amanda!

My full name is Amanda Nascimento dos Santos. Here in Brazil, it is very common for people to have several parts in their last name. My last name is actually short, since many people have four or five parts to their name. How many parts are there to your full name?

Where do you live? What is your house like?

I live in a neighborhood called Cajazeiras in the city of Salvador. It is not very close to the center of the city, but I like it because it is not very busy and my kids can play outside on the street. I live in a big house that has a garden in the front. There is a fence around it, like most houses in Brazil.

What is your family like?

I am married, and I have two daughters. One is seven years old and one is four years old.

In the morning, my husband and I go to work, and our daughters go to school. By lunchtime, my daughters return home from school and I come home from work. At that time,  we all have lunch together. Lunch is the biggest meal of the day in Brazil. The rest of the day, we like to watch TV, visit relatives, and play games.

How do you get around?

I usually take the public bus or I walk. Because it is usually very hot outside, I prefer to take the bus, but I like to walk because it is better for your health.

What types of clothing do you like to wear?

l like to wear flowing dresses and Bermuda shorts. Since I am a teacher, I need to dress nicely when I go to work. For the warm weather, clothing that is breezy, like dresses, is better for wearing all day and still looking nice. What do you like to wear to school when the weather is warm?

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to watch movies. I watch them at home and sometimes at the movie theater. I like to watch movies from the United States, because I like all of the actors and the stories. In my free time I also love to read, and I really like books that have a lot of mystery and suspense. I also enjoy classic novels. I also like reading books with my daughters. They  like to read fairy tales. What is your favorite kind of book?

What language(s) do you speak? How do you say “Hello” in your language?

I speak Portuguese and English. “Hello” in Portuguese is“Olá”.

 Do you have pets?

I do not have any pets, unfortunately, but many of the families in my neighborhood do.

Have you traveled? Where have you traveled to?

I have only traveled to cities in the interior of Brazil. There are many beautiful and historic cities to visit all over Brazil, and there are many I can get to travelling on a  bus. I would like to travel to the United States sometime soon. Where would you like to travel to next?

Amanda with our Portuguese Class

I am a professor of Portuguese and English. I teach at the public university in the city of Salvador. Right now, I am teaching students from the United States to speak Portuguese. I also teach people here in Brazil how to speak English.

Is there anything else you would like to say to students in the United States?

Because I am a teacher, I have to tell you to keep reading and read a lot! It is my family’s favorite thing to do, and reading is wonderful because it lets you feel like you are in a different world with different characters and places. Reading books about other countries is a great way to get to know about the world and about different countries.

It is also very important to learn about different cultures and to learn to speak different languages. Brazil has a lot of unique and beautiful traditions, dances, and foods, so keep learning about them and then look for more information on your own. You can learn about as many cultures as you want, visit them all, or make friends whose family is from another country. There are a lot of amazing things around the world waiting for you to discover!
