Journal: Learning to Be Your Best Self

Learning to Be Your Best Self

I have been inspired by many people in many different ways.  I have seen people struggle through hard times, but never give up.  I have seen people pull together in times of need, not just when there is a disaster, like the tornado that hit in Oklahoma, but when everyday life gets hard.  This inspires me.  I have seen people offer to help their neighbors. Even the simple act of recycling is caring about others and the environment.  It is an unselfish act.

Seeing so many people help each has inspired me to help others, and believe in the power of communities to help individuals reach their dreams.  This is something that I have experienced while I have been going to school. I hope you will realize there are a lot of people helping others in big ways and small ways, every day. You must believe that you have the power to make positive change. At the same time, you must pursue your dreams with the faith that good people will guide and support you along the way!

I am inspired all the time and surprisingly, it is not by some big grand event or experience.  It is a whole lot of little experiences by normal people that inspire me.  It is my family and friends that have helped me go to school that inspire me not to give up on my dream of graduating college.  It is when I see someone stop and help a complete stranger for nothing in return that inspires me to be the best human being I can be.  It is seeing the good deeds people do for one another that matter most!

There have been many times when someone has helped me out, and I cherish the memories of these acts of goodwill.  I have had friends help fix my car when it broke down so that I could get to school.  I have had a stranger change my flat tire when I was without a jack on the side of the road.  I have seen a stranger pay for a homeless mans meal at a restaurant.  These acts of random kindness, generosity and compassion help remind me of the type of person I want to be.  Right now, I am close to realizing my dream of graduating college and I know I have gotten this close to realizing my dream because of many caring people. There is so much good to enjoy in life!

It is so exciting to study and live in another country.  To wake up somewhere so beautiful every single day is already a dream come true.  This would not have been possible had I given up on my dream of going to college or dropped out of school.  I have made friends here from all over the world and had crazy, fun experiences here.  You don’t have to be rich to go to college or to study abroad.  I am doing this with financial aid and scholarships.  You can do this too! Nothing is impossible if you work hard and do not give up.

I do not know exactly what I want to do when I finish with my degree, but I do know that having a degree will open up more doors for me and give me more opportunities.  I also know that whether in my job or in my personal life, I want to give back to the community and help others.   So whatever your dream may be, no matter how big or small, I want to encourage you to not give up on it.  There are many people that will help you to achieve your dreams as long as you keep trying and do not give up.  It is a good life, enjoy it!
