Last Week in Brno
Abstract: This week was my last full week in Brno. I spent a lot of time studying for my final exams but also saying goodbye to Brno and all of the amazing friends I made here.
Introduction: This week was a fun but sad week because I had to start saying goodbye and having my “last” moments like my last time at my favorite restaurant or my last Czech class. It was very emotional and I still have some more goodbyes to say. In between the sadness of having to leave Brno and studying, I did have a lot of fun and explored a little more of Brno. I went to the lake with some friends, enjoyed watching a soccer match with the international students, and attended the last weekly country presentation.
Local Time: 12:30 PM
Time Zone: Central European Time (CET)
How far did I travel this week?: I stayed in Brno and enjoyed this beautiful city during my last full week!
How far have I traveled on your journey so far? About 1,800 miles
How did I get around this week? This week I spent a lot of time walking and enjoying the warm weather. I also took trams and buses to town as usual.
What was the most interesting place I visited this week? This week, I spent a lot of time studying for my final exams. Because of this, I did not get to travel too far or go anywhere very interesting. I did go to the lake with some friends for a nice study break and had a lot of fun!
Other travel news: It was nice to spend a weekend hanging out in Brno even though I had to study. I enjoyed walking around the city and not having to worry about making any plans.
Weather Tally (enter the # of days for each weather type):
Partly cloudy: 2
What is the air temperature right now? 61 degrees Fahrenheit
How was the weather this week? It rained and was a little colder than I would have liked on some of the days, but I can’t complain! After that crazy winter I will enjoy any sort of warmth this country throws at me. Along with the locals, I was walking around in dresses and shorts even though I normally would have been wearing pants on chilly nights.
What animals did I see this week? This week, I saw a hedgehog for the first time! Unfortunately, it was dark outside so I did not really get a good look at it. I saw a creature rustling around in the grass and I assumed it was a mouse. One of my friends told me it was a hedgehog and they are common here. When they were describing it because they did not know the word in English, I thought they were talking about a porcupine and was surprised that there would be a porcupine running around. Then I realized she was talking about a hedgehog. I was a little sad that I did not get to see him in the daylight, because I think hedgehogs are so cute! I tried to follow him, but he was faster than I was.
When I went to the lake with some friends, I also saw a water snake! My friend picked him up and we all admired the little snake. Another friend said that kind of snake has a venomous bite, so I did not admire it for too long. Usually I am afraid of snakes, but this little guy was so calm and small and did not scare me until I found out he was poisonous.
What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week? The coolest thing I saw was the snake because I had not really interacted up close with any animals in Brno before. It really made me want to check out the Brno zoo. I hope I have time to go!
Other Nature News: I noticed that there aren’t as many bugs in the Czech Republic as I am used to in Virginia. In the U.S., everyone has screens on windows, but here there are none. In the U.S. I would be concerned about bugs getting in my room, but I haven’t had that problem here even though I always leave the window open. It is really nice to not have to be worried about bugs!
What languages are spoken here? Czech
What type of money is used here? The Czech koruna or Czech crown
How much does a bottle of water cost? About 15-20 crowns (75 cents to 1 US Dollar)
What was the best meal this week? I went to an Indian restaurant down the street from my dorm and it was incredible! I had a lunch special combination plate, and I left very satisfied. I even had to go back to the same restaurant again later that week because it was so good!
What music did I listen to this week? This week, I went to an Electro Swing party and heard some Electro Swing music for the first time. It was really interesting and fun! I really like European dance music because people get very excited into the dancing.
What activity was the most fun this week? The most fun I had was hanging out at the lake with my friends. It was very nice to relax and spend time in the sunshine and by the water. It was my first time at the lake, so I am very happy I was finally able to check it off my bucket list! The water was way too cold to go in, but I did stick my toes in.
What did I read this week? This week, I spent a lot of time browsing a book called Teaching English Abroad that has lists of all the countries where people can teach English and information about how to find jobs in each country. Checking out this book made me even more excited about finding a job! I have been really interested in possibly going to Turkey to teach English, but I was having trouble finding resources for how to get a job there. This book gave me more hope because it has so much information.
What games or sports did I play this week? I played Uno at the lake! I am not too big into sports, but I did watch a soccer tournament that took place at my dorm.
Other news from this week: I graduated from college this week! I decided to spend my last semester abroad, so unfortunately I did not get to walk during the graduation ceremony. I think this experience was completely worth it, though! Now I am officially an alumna of Virginia Tech and ready to take on the world.
