Kids Field Note
This article is a description of Eric William’s experiences and beliefs about the world that he lives in and the world abroad. As a 9 year-old, it is quite interesting the way he sees things.
Eric William’s home is quite cool and interesting, and I am sure that any other kid would agree. Although Barbados is quite flat, he lives on one of the highest peaks of the island and has a view that overlooks the water, other houses and amazing sites. His neighborhood is within the parish of Christ Church. Eric told me that his house has two stories, with light blue paint like the sky. The top of the house is in the shape of a triangle with plenty of square, clear windows. Although I was not allowed to get a picture from the outside, I was allowed to get a snapshot of the inside for you all to get an idea!
What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?
I eat whatever. I eat a lot of cereal some of the mornings: Corn Flakes, Cheerios, and Fruit Loops, but that is only when my mother says OK. I am always forced to eat plaintains, eggs, wheat bread and some tea or porridge.
I eat at Chefette or KFC if I am near, but normally I bring a ham sandwich with me to go to school. (Chefette is a local restaurant, unique to Barbados, that serves fried chicken and curly fries.)
For dinner, my mom cooks delicious Bajan food such as ground provisions, rice and peas, fried chicken, or fish. (Ground provisions are yam, pumpkin, and things made of flour.)
What chores do you have at home?
I am responsible for making my bed, and washing my dishes and spoons. Although, sometimes my mother gets kinda upset if I do not help her with chores if she is cleaning.
What jobs do your parents have?
My mother is a student at the University of West Indies, and she is in the faculty of humanities. She loves to read history books, but she gets stressed out sometimes because she works full-time as a bank teller at Scotia Bank. My father lives in Canada and is auto-body repair man. He loves to fix cars.
What time does school start, and what time do you go home?
I start school at around 8:00 in the morning. I cannot be late or my teacher gets very vexed or mad at me and make a lot of noise in front of everyone. Then I have to leave at 2:00PM.
How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?
My mother always drops me off, and I have someone pick me up as long as it’s a friend or my aunt. I cannot go by myself. The school and the teachers does not let that happen at all.
What do you eat for lunch, and where do you eat? What is your favorite food?
I usually eat what my mom packs for me, like a ham sandwich or peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
What language do you speak at school? How do you say “Hello”? in your language? o What are some common kids’ names at your school?
At school, I speak the Bajan dialect, but the teachers make sure I speak proper English so that anyone can understand me anywhere I go. Everyone says “hello” the same way Americans do, and they also say “what’s up”. Common names at school are Richard, Dalton, Desmond, Leeroy for boys; and for girls, Shakae, Melissa, Jody.
What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?
I learn maths, reading, music, a little bit of science, and religion classes. My favorite is science since I want to make lots of money in the future.
What is your homework like?
My homework is sometimes kinda rough. I have to do 20 maths problem, and work for other classes, too, but my mom always helps, and I usually get everything correct. I care about my marks.
What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?
After school, I usually say bye to my only good friend, and head right home afterwards. Others stay after, but I usually leave. Everyone likes to play basketball, cricket and football, especially the older kids. But me, I am not into it too much. I do like to watch all the games, though.
Who is your favorite famous person?
I really like Jay-Z, but I want him to do more music. When I see him on TV, I like the jewelry and nice cars. I want to have that some day, if I work really hard”.
What kinds of music do you listen to?
I do not like Britney Spears, but I like rap, and r&b. I listen to a lot of music after I am done with my school work and on the weekends.
What would you like to be when you grow up?
I would like to be a dentist because I like to brush my teeth every morning. Some people don’t take care of their teeth, but I would like to help.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would like to go to America, but I would also like to visit Italy. My teachers said a lot of stuff about it that I like.
What do you know or think about the United States?
It seems fun, and big. And everyone seems happy and helpful. Everyone wants to go, and they never want to leave. I know that America helps everyone out there a lot.
What questions do you have for kids in the United States?
I wonder if all the kids are rich?
Are the teachers strict and rough?
How many clothes, shoes, and play cars do they all have?
Do you they like people like me?
