Jaslin’s Daily Life Field Note

The daily life of an architecture student is pretty busy.

Merve is an architecture student, and her life is busy, too! Read more!

What is daily life like?

My daily life is actually quite steady. I attend school and go home. Sometimes I go home and have to go back to school. The only thing that changes is when we have an architectural trip.

Istanbul is full of architecture. So we always travel around Istanbul to look at architecture. Right now I am working on a restoration project on Büyükada, which mean Big Island. I sometimes meet my friends and hang out around various places around Taksim.

What is your full name?

My full name is Merve Temerit. It was given to me by my grandmother, which was her name as well. Merve is a popular Turkish name.

Where do you live? What is your house like?

I live in a house located in Istanbul. It is a basic house that is enough to provide most of my needs. There is room for my scale model architecture projects. There is a wide living room for having a lot of guests. The kitchen is very useful because I have enough room for cooking.

What is your family like?

My family is small but very happy. They are currently in my hometown, Kütahya. It is in the Aegean region of Anatolia. My father is an artisan, which means craftsman. He makes furniture that people all over Kütahya have in their homes.  My mother is a housewife. She is what keeps the family together. I only have one sibling, a brother. He is 18 now. He is about to attend college. I hope he gets to attend college in Istanbul, too.

How do you get around?

I usually use the subway to arrive to my school and home. It is the easiest and cheapest way. I can take the bus sometimes, but it takes a long time. There is a lot of traffic in Istanbul.

What types of clothing do you like to wear?

I like to be comfortable. I like sports-style outfits, like track suit. I wear only casual clothes like jeans and T-shirts.

What do you like to do in your free time?

What free time? I do not have free time. If I do get a break from architecture, I turn to music. I have been interested in music since I was a little girl. I play guitar and sing. I also hang out with my friends. On the weekend I try to exercise. If only I had more free time, I would do many more activities!

What language(s) do you speak? How do you say “Hello” in your language?

I speak English and Turkish. Of course Turkish is my native language. “Merhaba!” means “Hello!” in Turkish.

Do you have pets?

No, I do not have pets. I do like cats. I just do not have enough time to take care of an animal.

Have you traveled? Where have you traveled to?

Yes, I have traveled to a two places in Europe. I have been to the Netherlands and Germany. I have also travelled to many cities in my own country, Turkey.

What do you do for work?

Currently I am in college studying architecture. Architecture requires a lot of concentration. It is very important to keep your concentration because it is such a hard subject to study. You can easily lose focus and give up because of the hard work or long nights without sleep. I have to pay attention to my sleeping and eating habits. I have to make sure I am sleeping and eating regularly in order to stay healthy. Sometimes I can get so focused, I forget to eat or sleep. This is very unhealthy! Although architecture is a hard major, it is something I am passionate about.

Is there anything else you would like to say to students in the United States?

Come and see the beauties of Turkey! Meet with Turkish people and break down prejudices!
