It is known as one of the top cities to visit in the world because of its natural beauty. It definitely did not disappoint. My friends and I decided to spend five days and four nights at Guilin and a nearby town called Yangshuo. While we were there we had the opportunity to do many activities that will stay in my memory forever.

Local Time: It is currently 7:51 pm

Time Zone: China has one time zone. Even though it’s a big country, the time is the same everywhere in China. It is not like the United States where there are different time zones.

Location (Latitude, Longitude): 25.2706° N, 110.2919° E

How far did I travel this week? I traveled many miles, as I walked, biked, and even rode a bicycle during my trip to a special city in the South of China, Guilin!

How far have I traveled on your journey so far? Too much to count! I have traveled a lot. I have been to Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Luoyang, Kaifeng, Guilin, and I am going to Inner Mongolia soon.

How did I get around this week?  I took the bullet train from Beijing to Guilin and from Guilin to Beijing. In Guilin, I rode bicycles all through the city, walked to nearby places, and took taxis to far places.

9mfhScrwTt6_ae5apV8agYZoJhuvIt20qqI2G-jbqkEOther travel news:  I had an amazing time in Beijing. I went with seven other friends on this trip to Guilin. Guilin is in the South of China. It is near Hong Kong, which is about 27 hours by train! We spent five days and four nights in Guilin and Yangshuo, a really beautiful town nearby. On this trip, we went to a mud bath and hot spring cave, hiked by the Li River, got an a bamboo raft in the Li River, rode a bicycle throughout the city of Guilin, and visited a famous lake area with Pagodas.

Weather Tally (enter the # of days for each weather type):

Sunny: 3

Cloudy: 1

Partly cloudy: 1

Rainy: 2

Snowy:  0

Windy: 0

What is the air temperature right now?   It is about 78 degrees Fahrenheit. It is actually the coldest it has been all week. Earlier in the week, it was about 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The weather felt like it was summer!

How was the weather this week? It was beautiful! It was hot and warm! It made me want to go to the beach. Unfortunately, I had final tests to study for!

What animals did I see this week?  I saw dogs, cats, birds, and while in Guilin I saw cows, chickens, and sheep!

What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?   I saw two little dogs playing with each other. Read more below!

Other Nature News: Even though I saw many cool animals like sheep and cows while I was in Guilin, I really liked the sight of two cute dogs playing randomly in the middle of a hiking trail alongside the Li River! As I was tired from the hike, I heard barks. They weren’t mean or aggressive barks, they were cute playful barks. As I got closer, I realized they were two puppies playing with each other! They were rolling around, standing up, and running around. It made me smile and think about my own dog, Max, who is back in the United States.

What languages are spoken here?   People in Guilin speak Mandarin Chinese too, but their accent is different. In the south, people don’t enunciate certain words correctly. It was interesting getting to hear a different accent from the common Beijing accent.

What type of money is used here?   People here still use the yuan, which is the common currency in China.

How much does a bottle of water cost?  It depends where you go. In more tourist spots, a bottle of water can cost up to 5 kuai, which is more expensive than a bottle at a less known store. At a local store, it will only cost about 1 or 2 kuai.

What was the best meal this week?   The best meal this week was at a local restaurant in Guilin. We ate so much! We ordered some fried rice, some sweet and sour chicken, some beef and veggies, fish in soy sauce, and some tea. We were offered frogs, but we weren’t daring enough to try it! Maybe next time…or not!

What music did I listen to this week?  I listened to a lot of music, but one song that has been stuck in my head, partially because it is played everywhere I go, is Psy’s new song called “Gentlemen.” Psy is the artist who sings “Gangnam Style.” Have you guys heard of it? I’m sure that you will also hear Psy’s new song, Gentlemen, because it is really good! Make sure you hear it.

What activity was the most fun this week?   My favorite activity was definitely going to an underground cave in Guilin. There I was able to see some really cool stones, but most fun of all was being able to take a mud bath and swim in the hot springs. In the mud bath, I even had the opportunity to go down a mud slide! It was really fun!

What did I read this week? This week I read nothing but my Chinese textbooks. Those are hard enough. I had to make sure I study hard!

What games or sports did I play this week?  Sadly, I didn’t play any sports. But I did bike many miles! That counts, right? I biked all through town and by the Li River too!

Other news from this week: This week was very entertaining! I had the opportunity to go to Guilin and Yangshuo where I had an amazing time with friends. Then I came back to Beijing to study for exams. That wasn’t so fun but I got through them! Now I am just preparing for my trip next week to Inner Mongolia. It is going to be very fun!
