One of London’s biggest traditions is going to the pub with friends. People have said that they could not imagine London without pubs. Pubs are similar to some bars in America, but people go there to enjoy other people’s company.
What traditions does the community have?
Pubs in the United Kingdom have a long history. They were first called “public houses” as an opposite of “private house” like someone’s home. They were open to the public, meaning almost anyone. Historically pubs have always different than restaurants and cafes. Pubs have always been casual places where friends can go to talk about everything from everyday activities to politics. Pubs are an important part of the culture in the United Kingdom. In many cities and towns, the local pub is the place where everyone gathers to hear the news and see other people. Pubs often have old, wooden tables and chairs, and you can imagine that they might have looked just the same hundreds of years ago. English people are famous for their gardens of flowers too, and during the warm spring and summer months, pubs can have lots of flowers out front, which make them look pretty and inviting.
It is a cultural tradition to spend hours at a time in pubs socializing. The British enjoy having conversations with friends, and they talk about everything from politics to soccer. Many people go to their favorite pub after work to relax and wind down after a busy day. Most people in London get off from work at 5:00 p.m. Pubs are always crowded during that time. People can stay in a pub, eating, drinking and talking sometimes until the closing time, eleven o’clock at night.
I have met people from all around the world in London’s pubs. People usually go to the same pub every day. I have met local people at pubs and have gone back to that pub a month later, and they are there again! Some people visit the same pub every day after work for years! Pubs are almost like people’s living rooms. Another tradition that goes together with pubs is playing pool. Many people in London love pool, and there are even pool tournaments. There are friendly competitions, and people play against each other every day until one team wins.
Why does the community have the tradition?
I believe the United Kingdom has this tradition because of how close the people are. People here are social and very friendly with one another. It has been much easier for people to meet in a “public house” rather than in someone’s home. There is a strong sense of community in London. People here do all kinds of things together. People socialize at parks, street markets, and especially pubs. Pubs are just another way for people to get together and enjoy one another’s company. People have birthday dinners and parties at pubs as well. The British people also enjoy being happy. They say “Cheers!” a lot in pubs and everywhere else. Saying “cheers” is also a tradition, as people wish everyone to be cheerful and healthy.
Why are they interesting?
Pubs are so interesting, because each of them has a different feel and often a long history. Some are large, and others very small and intimate. There is often music played that goes along with the pub’s theme. Every pub has a distinct name. Some of them are hundreds of years old and still have their original names. The name of the pub usually gives a hint about the “vibe” of the pub. The pubs that I have visited are named Shakespeare’s Head and Clerk and Well. Many very significant people have spent a lot of time in pubs, and it is fun to know about that. For example, the original Shakespeare’s Head was the regular pub for Charles Dickens, a famous British author.
