Journal #2: Learning a New Language

Languages are found in every part of the world! Here is Italy, the home language is Italian. However, there are different dialects in different areas of the country. These dialects might make you think that they are not speaking Italian, and that they are speaking another language. For example, in the city of Naples, the Italian dialect is Napolitano. Locals keep telling me that Napolitano is really close to the home language, but it’s hard for me to understand!

Although different parts of Italy have their own dialects, everyone does speak Italian. The dialect is spoken by locals in the streets. However, if you watch Italian TV, they speak clear Italian without any dialect.

My native language is Spanish. Spanish and Italian are similar languages. Sometimes, it is easier for me to understand Italian, just because I speak Spanish.  Sometimes I have to be the translator of the group when we travel around Italy. I enjoy it because it makes me feel that I can speak three languages.

Many Italians are learning English as a second language. They like to practice with us. Sometimes, some of the sentences are poor, or they just simply have an accent that is too hard to understand.  Sometimes these differences in language make the conversation even more enjoyable and funny to have.

In my own personal experience, I know what it is like to come to a new country and not speak the language. I came to New York when I was 16 years old. I did not know any English at all. In the U.S., some Americans I met made fun of people who spoke English with an accent. Even so, I learned English, and many people helped me along the way.

Wherever you go in this world, there are many different languages that you probably never thought about. However, English is a universal language. It can be found pretty much everywhere in this world. English can be good, or really poor with an accent that’s hard to understand. Even so, it helps you to get by! I think that we all should be respectful to each other, and try to understand at least something from each other’s language. When you can speak another language, it can open more doors to a brighter future, and also make some new friends.
